Earth Day

Earth Day

4 minute read

On 28 January 1969, an oil drilling operation off the coast of the Santa Barbara Channel experienced a blow-out. Within 10 days, an estimated 80,000 to 100,000 barrels of crude oil seeped into the Channel. At the time, it was the largest oil spill the area that the United States had witnessed.

The environmental effects were immediately devastating. A recorded 3,686 seabirds died, with the official number never truly known. Marine life including sea lions, elephant seals, and the fish population suffered greatly. With environmental concerns already mounting at the time, the oil spill was a breaking point. Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin, an environmental activist, was inspired to take action after the tragedy and founded a day that promotes education and awareness about protecting the planet. Thus the first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970.

Tateossian London has always had a deep respect for nature. Many Tateossian London accessories have been inspired by and crafted with naturally-occurring gems, minerals, metals and stones, as well as sustainable alternatives such as recycled materials. This Earth Day, show your support with an environmentally-inspired luxury piece.

What is Earth Day?

Celebrated on 22 April every year, Earth Day encourages everyone, from the individual to the global community, to help progress environmental protection and action. There are various events held worldwide, coordinated by EarthDay.org, that spread awareness and education. Earth Day is actually recognised as the largest secular observance in the world.

Earth Day 2022

Every year, EarthDay.org provides a theme based the most pressing concerns at the time. In 2022 the theme is “Invest In Our Planet”. The organisation challenges the world to “Act (boldly), innovate (broadly) and implement (equitably).” The theme is a call for governments, businesses and individuals to start investing in what matters most — the longevity of the environment.

The Tateossian selection for Earth Day

There are a multitude of ways to get involved in Earth Day. From planting trees to making donations, Earth Day encourages you to contribute in any way you can. Investing in your future extends further than recycling and renouncing straws; being conscious and considerate with your accessory choices is an often overlooked practice. It’s more sustainable to purchase something that will last, be cherished and has a timeless style.

Call to action enamel pins

Inspired by decisive action, the Tateossian London pins are more than just designer accessories. It’s a call to come together and protect the planet. The Helping Hands pin and Planet Earth pin have a symbolic pendant connected to a globe with a rope chain. Each pin is handcrafted with an oxidised finish. The combination of the finish and chain creates a vintage artisanal look.

Globally recognised accessories

Global change is no small feat. It requires dedicated effort from all members of society; from governments to businesses, right down to your individual choices. But once you start seeing positive change, you realise that all the effort is worth it. The globe cufflinks and globe cage pin are subtle reminders of what Earth Day is working towards: saving the planet. The miniature globe in both accessories is able to rotate, offering a stunning view of the lapis lazuli it is crafted from.

Natural phenomena

Looking out onto an unpolluted shore, taking a hike without seeing a piece of litter, watching the return of species to their natural habitats — this is evidence that Earth’s Day goals can be achieved. The Rutilated Quartz cufflinks capture the unfiltered beauty of nature. The needle-like inclusions of rutile within the quartz stone create unique and interesting patterns. The gold Rutilated Quartz cufflinks in rhodium plated sterling silver and the black Rutilated Quartz cufflinks in yellow gold plated silver accentuate the raw beauty of the quartz by complementing it with the rhodium and gold metals.
